NEW YORK (September 25, 2014) — The Seventh Annual World Focus on Autism took place during the United Nations General Assembly today in New York City. Autism Speaks presented the second Global Autism Achievement Award to Dr. Liri Berisha, the former First Lady of Albania and President of the Albanian Children’s Foundation. Speakers at the event included Autism Speaks Co-founders Suzanne and Bob Wright and Mrs. Ban Soon-taek, spouse of U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
The event convened first spouses from across Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe and the Middle East for an intimate breakfast to unite the “Global Autism Movement,” and to discuss how we are turning innovation into action: an effort led by Autism Speaks to address the universal challenge of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) through awareness-raising and service improvement. Data suggests that autism affects approximately 1% of the global population.
